a millen-gordon guide to… the perfect spring clean

11th March 2022
Though I’ll hold my hands up and say that we have a cleaner that visits the house and office once a week (who quite frankly, we couldn’t live without – we love you Lana!), my team will confirm that when I’m in the mood for a clear out, I roll my sleeves up and go all in…

And nothing says ‘it’s time for a clear out’ like the start of spring.

With that in mind, I thought I’d share my guide to the perfect spring clean (Before you even think it, no it isn’t ‘ask Lana to do it all!’) and the products that make the whole experience that bit more enjoyable.

Get your marigolds at the ready one and all – there’s some good ones in here.

The spray…

I won’t lie, cleaning got a whole lot more appealing when Kinfill arrived on my doorstep because they’ve managed to create a cleaning solution that adds a little luxury to the chores. Not only does every bottle smell divine – I really mean that – but they’re the best cleaning products I’ve used and their glass bottles are designed to be used again and again.  So much so that we have a dedicated space in one of the kitchen drawers for their refills… cue me gushing about organised drawers.

The storage…

When life feels like it’s moving at 100mph, I find that something as simple as opening a drawer and seeing colour coordinated pyjamas or categorised cutlery calms me down. Which is why we have drawer organisers in pretty much every drawer in the house. They don’t have to be fancy – we got these bamboo ones from Amazon – but finding adjustable ones that can be stretched or shrunk to fill whatever space you want, helps.

These glass jars from IKEA have saved the day in the kitchen cupboards (our tea selection was getting a tad out of control) and I love anything from The Basket Company for bulkier items like bed linen, towels, laundry etc…

Speaking of bed linen…

The bed linen…

Though this is more of Ali’s domain, no spring clean is complete without fresh sheets on the bed in my opinion so one of the first boxes to tick off is always stripping the sheets. We’ve currently got a relaxed white linen set from Cuddledown on the bed but if you’re looking for a crisper look, we love White & Green’s organic luxury duvet sets too. A timeless classic that adds instant luxury to a room.

When it comes to fabric conditioner, I personally love ‘Outdoorable’ by Lenor but I’ll be nice and let you insert your fabric conditioner of choice here!

The air purifier…

Now we all know that opening the patio doors and letting fresh air in is the optimal solution here (!) but when the weather’s not playing ball, I like to take matters into my own hands. Enter PureEssential’s Purifying Air Spray. I’ve raved about this beauty on more than one occasion but the fact that it’s free from synthetic chemicals – made up entirely of essential oils instead – means that it doesn’t leave that claggy air freshener smell (that I personally hate) behind. Instead, it adds an uplifting aroma to the room (you know when something just smells clean!?) whilst going hardcore Charlie’s Angels on all of the bacteria in the air. Tis a win win!

The candle…

It wouldn’t be ‘A Millen Guide to…’ if it didn’t feature a candle right?! Which is why I had to end this list with this candle from Bertioli. For me, it’s the perfect way to round off an afternoon spent cleaning because not only does it play a crucial part in said spring clean, it rewards you with an instantly calming scent that says:

‘Well done for your handwork Mrs Millen-Gordon. Now pour yourself a glass of well-deserved wine and chill.’

A statement that I stand behind in full!

I think that’s everything. Let the folding/organising/categorising commence!

What are your spring cleaning essentials? I’d love to hear your tips in the comments below!
