opening chapter ten – hello october

1th October 2022
“And all at once, summer collapsed into Autumn…” - Oscar Wilde
Logs crackle. Embers glow. Shadows dance in the night. Brisk walks. Bracing air. Blow the cobwebs away. In the fields, pumpkins slouch, patiently waiting to be picked. Pumpkin soup. Pumpkin pie. Pumpkin spiced lattes are back. Fleece-lined wellies. Tweed jackets. For the dogs too? Why of course! Fallen leaves - now amber - crisp and crunch underfoot. Baked potatoes. Baked cookies. Comfort food - bring it on! Scents of cinnamon and spice swirl through the air. Fancy dress. Toffee apples. Trick or treat? Be nice! Light the fire. Cosy up. It’s getting chilly out there…
Every new chapter is a cause for excitement but there’s something extra special about October’s arrival in my book.
Whether it’s because it comes hand-in-hand with autumnal colours that are too stunning to ignore or because – after a back-to-back summer out and about – it’s a welcomed excuse to head inside, cosy up and hibernate for a while, October provides me with so much comfort and a sense of hope for the weeks ahead.

Which is why my plans for this month are fairly low key, centred around recharging at home and spending time outdoors.

What’s new, Lydia?! I know!

Long gone are the days when this month meant fancy dress and fake blood. (Though I did love those nights, I won’t lie!) With that in mind, if ghosts and ghoulies are what you’re seeking right now, I’m afraid you’ve come to the wrong place! Instead, you’ll find me curled up on the sofa with Lumi and a good book, as Porter and Berkeley toast their chestnuts in front of the fire..! If you’re lucky, I might throw in a seasonal bake or two…

Did someone say apple and cinnamon sponge?!

In other news, I – along with so many I’m sure – am beyond excited that ‘black tights season’ is back. For me, only Calzedonia will do but I’ll be nice and let you insert your tights brand of choice there! It goes back to this idea of comfort doesn’t it? As soon as the seasons dictate the return of the tights, choosing outfits immediately becomes that bit more freeing.

Perhaps it’s because they add another layer of warmth (and who doesn’t love to be toasty at this time of year?) Or perhaps it’s the added security that they provide… after all, the fear of your dress blowing up in the wind is a lot less embarrassing when black tights have you covered, right?!

In any case, I’m looking forward to layering up in the weeks ahead and embracing the autumnal chill as it elbows its way in.

Bring on the blackberry picking, conker collecting and welly walks!

I hope you and yours have a toasty one too.

As always, I’d love to hear what you’re looking forward to this month. Let me know in the comments below.

I’m in my golden era. Ad having nurtured my hair back to health with professional haircare, supplements and hair oiling I knew I didn’t have enough time to grow my hair back for Summer so the wonderful team at @greatlengthsuk enlisted @imy_hair to transform me into my Summer style for the next few months. For those that don’t know Great Lengths has always been my extension brand of choice, about 15 years ago I had them for 2.5years to help me grow my hair back after I experimented a little too much with my style. My hair grew back healthy and strong and I didn’t have to wish the time away as the extensions gave me the extra few inches I needed without damaging my hair. I will have these removed at the end of the summer to continue to grow my hair back with regular Diamond cuts.
