The Science of Smiling – Teeth Whitening

So there’s this lady at my gym, and I’m not sure whether she realises or not but every morning she brightens mine a little more. She so friendly and happy, that you can’t help but feel lightly more positive after speaking to her. Which got me thinking about the power of smiling and just how important it is that we all do it more often. However, all that said rewind 9 years and you were lucky if you got a ‘smeyez’ out of me because I refused to show my teeth. They were badly stained, from what? I don’t know but it was awful!

I tried everything whitening toothpastes, brushing with bicarbonate of soda, fancy teeth whitening kits from boots, you name it I’d tried it and still I wasn’t prepared to let them see the light of day. Luckily for me one day my Grandma (who never ceases to save the day) decided to have her teeth whitened, so she booked me in too. The procedure cost in the region of £500 which made my head hurt! Back then there just wasn’t the technology to make this  kind of procedure accessible. Fast forward to present day and available products have come on leaps and bounds which is great for me as over the years my teeth had became increasingly stained again (this girl loves her coffee), so I was in major need of a top up. The team over at Smile Sciences kindly sent me over their ‘Bubble-gum Flavoured Teeth whitening kit’ to try out for myself, I was pretty apprehensive after all my failed attempts previously thinking that the LED light was merely there for a gimmick.

I followed the steps molding the trays to my teeth and allowing to cool, then I filled the individual teeth molds (I only did the top teeth as I wanted to show you the difference) with the gooky substance from the syringe. I left this on with the LED light in my mouth for 30mins as stated and I did this for 5 days.

During the first application I noticed my teeth went a lot whiter when the gel was on my teeth and when I took it off it faded slightly. But the difference was still noticeable and continued to improve with every application. The gel didn’t taste offensive either which is something I remember from my previous teeth whitening experience. The bubble gum flavour was a complete hit!

TW Before TW During TW During2TW AfterI’m genuinely shocked with how happy I am with the results/how much I had let my teeth fade, Yikes! I even went to the extent of taking a smiley selfie, a stark difference from my usual duck face. But seriously, I was so over the moon that I popped the people over at Smile Sciences a quick message to see if they could come up with a discount code (which I do not earn commission from) for you guys to give it a go too and they said YES, just simply enter “Lydia” at the checkout to get the kit for $29.99.

Now none of us have any excuse to not be smiling all the time, just like the lady in my gym!

      Hi Nikoline,
Haha! I know it does look strange but its actually surprisingly similar to the products used by dentists. 🙂

I’ve been looking for a new whitening kit, maybe I’ll have to try this one! Do you think this would irritate my sensitive teeth? xx

      Hi Dee,
I noticed some heightened sensitivity after using this product but I experienced the same level of sensitivity when I had them whitened by my dentist, I believe when using lightening products this is a pretty standard occurrence so if you have super sensitive teeth it might be best to try other methods or take a day or two break in between each application.

    Hey Lydia,

I tested another kit from a german label but really wasnt satisfied with the results so I think about to buy this kit. What is the name of the kit the offer with your name as sale code stands for? Can it really cost only 29.99$?

Your smiley selfie is so nice, you should definitely smile more! The only teeth whitening I’ve tried before are the Crest Whitening Strips which are really good but I’d like to try something with an LED light to see if it’s any better.
